What is Ausbildung? A fully paid, structured 2–3 year vocational training program in Germany — and here's the part most people don't know: your employer pays you a monthly salary from day one. Verpflichtungserklärung
German Sponsorship Letter — an alternative to the blocked account for applicants with a sponsor in Germany.
What is a Verpflichtungserklärung?
A Verpflichtungserklärung is a formal declaration of commitment where a person legally residing in Germany (your sponsor) takes financial responsibility for you during your stay. Under §§ 66-68 of the German Residence Act (AufenthG), the sponsor agrees to cover all your costs — living expenses, accommodation, healthcare, and even deportation costs — for the duration of your visa. This document is signed at a German immigration authority (Ausländerbehörde) or embassy and is legally binding.
Key point: The Verpflichtungserklärung can replace the blocked account requirement at some embassies. However, it depends on the embassy and visa officer. Some may still request the blocked account. Use this as a supplement or alternative. Your sponsor must be financially stable (employed or self-employed with stable income).
Who Can Be Your Sponsor?
✅
German Citizen
A German national with stable income, even a friend or distant relative.
✅
EU Citizen in Germany
Any EU/EEA citizen legally living and working in Germany.
✅
Non-EU Resident
Any person with a valid German residence permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) or unlimited stay.
What documents does the sponsor need? Valid ID/passport, proof of German address, recent payslips or tax returns (last 3 months), employment contract or business registration, health insurance certificate.

Next Steps for Your Sponsor
1. Your sponsor prints this letter and takes it to the Ausländerbehörde (immigration office) in their city.
2. They sign it in front of an officer and pay a small administrative fee (~€29).
3. The stamped original is sent to you to include in your visa application.
4. You can also present it at the embassy yourself — ask the visa officer if they accept it in lieu of the blocked account.
